How to Install Replacement Windows

It’s advisable you only replace your own windows if you have some DIY and carpentry experience. If you are unsure, rather be safe than sorry and call in window installation experts to do it for you.

Each window can take up to four hours to install and if not installed properly they can reduce the energy efficiency in your home, so take special care to waterproof and insulate when installing replacement windows.

Measure

Before you even think of replacing the windows yourself you need to take measurements. You need to measure jam to jam, from side to side and top to bottom.

A useful tip is to measure each window you intend replacing individually, while they may look exactly the same, you will be surprised to note that they may not all be the same size. Making a diagram and drawing the windows with measurements will help you ensure you buy the right windows for the right openings.

Windows are often custom made, so rounding your measurements off to the closest inch is the best way to ensure you get the right window sizes.

The Installation Begins

Your beautiful new energy efficient windows arrive and you’ve set aside the weekend to get going. You will want to start by prying off the old stops, do this carefully because these can be reused.

Once you have done that you remove the window and weather proof the area around the window to ensure it remains dry even in the harshest of weather before placing your replacement window in the opening to confirm it’s a snug fit.

You may find some unwelcome gaps on the sides where the wall is uneven or where the window size is ever so slightly smaller than the window you received. Adding shims into the open space will ensure the window sits correctly in position.

Make sure the window is centre in the opening before screwing it into place, then go inside and make sure it opens and closes correctly before calking along the edges to seal it off.

You’re almost done, all you have to do now is install your stops on the inside and your first replacement window installation is complete.
